Important updates to parasite treatment in dogs

Based on the latest information and what we're seeing in Massachusetts, we're making a change to the way we approach parasite prevention for your dog.
We are phasing out Heartgard. This is due to increasing resistance in heartworms, which can make it less effective than we’d like for reliable protection.
If your dog is currently on Heartgard, there’s no need to worry. At your next visit—or anytime you’d like—we’re happy to help you choose the best option for your pet’s age, size, and lifestyle.
Our top recommendation:
ProHeart 12: Heartworm Prevention
A single injection that provides 12 months of steady heartworm protection using slow-release technology. We're recommending this because we're seeing monthly pills become less reliable as heartworms develop resistance to older medications.
Bravecto Quantum: Flea & Tick Prevention
The first FDA-approved annual flea and tick injection. One shot protects against fleas and multiple tick species for a full year. No monthly pills needed!
Cost?
Generally comparable to monthly preventatives.
These are excellent options for most dogs, but like all medications, they may not be right for every pet. Ask us at your next visit! We're here to talk through what's best for your dog.
Other great options:
Most overall protection: Sentinel Spectrum + Bravecto
This combination offers the broadest coverage against internal parasites, fleas, and ticks.
Convenient all-in-one option: NexGard PLUS
Very easy-to-use - it’s very effective, though it does not cover tapeworms and may not provide the same duration of flea/tick protection as Bravecto.
Gentle all-in-one option (great for small or sensitive dogs): Senergy
A gentle option that provides solid protection, though it is lighter on certain internal parasites and ticks.
Additional or standalone topical protection: Vectra
An excellent repellent for flea and tick coverage that can be used on its own or added to any of the above.
Please don't hesitate to reach out with questions to discuss what option is best for your dog.
